The History Of The Collie

The Collie is believed to have originated from the borders of Scotland and Ireland. The farmers and shepherds required an intelligent and reliable dog to guard the flock and be a family companion. Although today Collies are known for their elegance and beauty, they were first valued for their intelligence and their ability to work flock.

Early Caollies were small and had a wide assortment of colours and markings. The Rough Collie's grace and glory- its beautiful flowing coat- was probably the result of the harsh climate it lived in.

Since the first Collie appearanace in the show ring in 1860, the Collie has changed in many ways:                   They have doubled in size               Their coat has become thicker         Heads leaner and lighter                 Their eyes are darker                      Despite these appearance changes, the Collie maintains its charming personality, ability to work, intelligence and devotion that attracted Scottish farmers to them all those years ago.

Collies have proven themself to be a very adaptable breed. Many Collies have also lived up to the high standards set by Lassie; performing heroism and bravery.

In 1873 the Kennel Club was founded in Britain. On June 24th 1881, the Kennel Club put up the first standard for the Pedigree Longhaired Collie.

Already as far back as 1874 and 1877 the Shorthaired Collie was listed in the 'Smooth-Collie-Class'.

Thanks to its superb qualities, which hardly any of these dogs has lost, Shorthaired Collies nowadays make marvelous family dogs and pets.
